The First Anniversary of the Orange Revolution in Ukraine
November 2005
After great events last year in Ukraine that became
known as “Orange Revolution” and the first anniversary
of which the people of Ukraine marks today, Ukraine
went through the considerable changes. The new
period of the history of Ukraine began, the period of its
consolidation and development as a state with mature
economy, democratic and stable political system.
During the confrontation of the old regime and the
people’s will the whole world watched Ukraine. For
many countries it was real discovery of Ukraine and
Ukrainians, the European nation with centuries-old
traditions and history that accounts for the thousand of
years.
The victory of the Orange Revolution showed that Ukrainian people as the whole civilized world is
committed to such fundamental values as democracy, liberty and respect of human rights and
fundamental freedoms. Ukraine proved that it deserves to be a member of the European family
as it shares the same principles.
For Ukraine the greatest accomplishment of the year
2005 is mature democracy. The Government of
Ukraine has changed, having eventually realized that
the people, those voters that convincingly proved last
year they could elect their leaders, were the only
source of power. For the first time Ukrainians have
the government that clearly understands that it must
hear its citizens and account for each measure it
takes.
One of the main things achieved was a change in the
people’s consciousness. They made certain of their
capability to influence the destiny of their own country, to determine their future and the fortune of
their families. This change was the first step on the way to creating the European Ukraine where
democratic ideals would not be a meaningless sound.
European values have real weight today in Ukraine.
The European and Euro-Atlantic integration is one of
the most important foreign policy priorities of Ukraine.
Till the end of the current year we hope to enter the
World Trade Organization.
A year ago, the Government of Ukraine defined its
major priorities: levering of life standards, worthy
conditions of life, stability, development, and Ukraine’s
international authority.
Today we in Ukraine already see the results of the events that took place on the Independence
Square (Maidan) in Kyiv downtown and throughout Ukraine.
Today we face such challenges as further
development of free and independent mass-media,
economic reforms and strengthening of the well-
being of average Ukrainians, creation of civil
society institutes and healthy, viable political system.
The absence of pressure of the authorities on mass-
media and availability of the all open sources of
information for population is one of the main gains of
the Orange Revolution. There are no more topics or
issues closed for criticism.
One of the predominant directions of the work of the Ukrainian Government is reforming of
economy, facilitating investments, promoting business activity, creation of equal competitive
conditions for all participants of the market. The aim of this process is the prosperity of Ukrainian
people. Although many things remain to be done, lots of the Ukrainian people got the hope for
better future.
