President greets Ukrainians on Independence Day
On Independence Day, August 24, President Victor
Yushchenko addressed the nation.
“Today, we are honoring the independent and free
Ukraine, the greatest creation of the Ukrainian nation.
Fourteen years ago we confirmed our right to be masters in
our own house,” he said in the Maidan. “I am proud of the
nation to which I am happy to belong. We had enough
courage and unity to do it. We chose independence as the
highest destination for our land and all of us.”
According to the Head of State, “Ukraine is being built by
each of us, no matter what language we speak, which church we
visit and which political creed we follow.” “We all have common fate and only one Ukraine,” stressed Victor
Yushchenko.
The Head of State reminded all of the Orange Revolution, those historic days when thousands of people came
to the Maidan to battle for their rights.
“Freedom we gained in the Maidan does not belong to one political party. Millions of people who survived
those snowy and frosty weeks defended their dignity and rights of all people in Donetsk, Lviv, Sumy and
Crimea.” “Every single day the people see it more clearly,” said the President.
In his speech, the Head of State noted that this year’s surveys first showed that most Ukrainians consider their
country to be truly independent.
“The victory of freedom strengthened our independence,” said Yushchenko.
“Independence Day is our national symbol. It reminds us of our glorious past. We can overcome all obstacles.
We are strong and gifted enough to do what we plan. What is important is to be united. Parted, we can do
nothing. Together, we can do everything,” said the Head of State.
