The Article Numbering Association of Ukraine “EAN-Ukraine” was established in September 1994 under the initiative of the Economists Union of Ukraine. The Association was founded in compliance with recommendations set by the EAN (the European Article Numbering Association established in 1977) and currently enjoys full membership in this organization. In 2002, the European Association became the member of the EAN International (including the Uniform Code Council UCC and Canadian Council on E-Commerce), and its activities actually shifted on the global level. As a result, in 2003 the EAN was renamed into the GS1 (i.e. the Global System). Presently, the GS1 is the first and the only organization engaged in standardization and unification of world trade informational backing via maintenance of the global standard system EAN/UCC. Staring from July 2004 and as the member of Î81, the Association EAN-Ukraine was also renamed into GS1 Ukraine.
According to its status of the GS1 full member and in pursuance to the Resolution No.821 of Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers issued on December 12, 1994, the Association EAN-Ukraine has the right to represent Ukraine in GS1 and other international organizations, and also to represent there the interests of Ukrainian producers and distributors in the sphere of automatic identification and bar coding. Simultaneously, the Association acts as the official GS1 representative with exceptional authorities related to introduction and administration of the unified world standard system EAN/UCC in Ukraine.
Besides, the Association has the right to represent the international organization EPCglobal in Ukraine. This organization was established in 2003 under the GS1 initiative to develop the global network of automatic identification and real-time commodity tracking on the whole way from producers to end consumers.
The Association EAN-Ukraine (GS1 Ukraine) is self-governing, non-for-profit, and non-governmental organization. Major purpose of its activity is to introduce the global multi-sectoral identification and bar coding system, based on the international standards EAN/UCC, in Ukraine.
At present, the Association EAN-Ukraine (GS1 Ukraine) embraces more than 4,000 domestic producers, distributors, commercial organizations, and private entrepreneurs, which can use bar codes and other EAN/UCC standards in compliance with the GS1 requirements and proceeding from their membership in the Association. The Association conferred more than 250,000 identification numbers. Owing to its efforts, the EAN/UCC codes with prefix “482” were granted to most Ukrainian-made consumer goods that are sold via retail trade or are exported abroad.
Regional representative offices of the Association were established in all regional centers and large cities of Ukraine.
Also, the Association EAN-Ukraine embarked on educational activity in the sphere of bar coding and electronic communications for business. Periodically, the Association arranges workshops, work meetings, and other educational events devoted to introduction of automatic identification. To that end, the Association used to publish corresponding information materials.
To contribute to development of electronic communications between Ukrainian enterprises, the Association created a number of electronic informational resources. All Ukrainian participants of the EAN/UCC system were included into the international Internet catalogue GEPIR. Also, the Association elaborated and introduced the national electronic catalogue for products and services, and electronic catalogue for variable measure commodities that are supplied for the retail sales.
The Association EAN-Ukraine (GS1 Ukraine) is notable for active participation in the state standardization system. The Association contributed a lot to elaboration of the system of Ukraine’s state standards in the sphere of automatic identification, and is constantly engaged in improvement of existing state standards and elaboration of new state standards of Ukraine.
